This is one of the disputing issues.

Some people say that 'The beginning of glasses is that Roger Bacon, the English philosopher and scientist had used lenses for the purpose of optical usage in 1268.'

However, this is just an insistence of some people without clear evidence. The most credible record is the story that is the rest of the inscription in a cemetery at Florence, Italy. This inscription contains the story about the beginning of the glasses like the following:

'Salvino D'armato degli Armati who lived in Florence rest in peace. God, forgive him.'

At the very first, this inscription mentioned the inventor of the glasses. Although there is not any clear evidences which support the above story, we can assume that the glasses were appeared around Florence area.

Anyway, we are able to get the idea that the invention of the glasses was in 13th century and the glasses were generalized in 14th century.

As the one of evidences, we could see the painting of 'Tommaso di Modena'.

Thus, people now acknowledge tacitly that the glasses was developed in Italy at the end of 13th century based on these two evidences - The appearance of the word 'Glasses' and The painting of people who wear 'Glasses'.

Today, we end up here for this story.
Please, look forward to the next episode of 'History of the Glasses'
